Roberto Baggio Forward - Roberto Baggio rose to fame at Fiorentina, but was most successful with Juventus. What might have been his finest hour turned into a nightmare as the gifted playmaker botched his effort in the penalty shoot-out that decided the 1994 World Cup. Baggio was voted European Footballer of the year in 1993.

His spectacular volley in the final stands as one of the finest goals ever scored. Van Basten was voted European Footballer of the year in 1988, 1989 and 1992. #1: Not included are matches played at the Olympics as these are no longer recognised as full caps by FIFA (after a decision in 1999). Otherwise the numbers would be 112 caps with 42 goals scored, as some sources report.
